Super Spencer pips Bakthiar to victory; clinical Kristina cleans up

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

West London Golf Society's third event of 2023 was a thrilling and unpredictable affair, as nearly 40 golfers tackled the tricky Pyrford Lakes course in Surrey.

With constant water hazards and challenging tee shots, low points totals were expected, but the players defied expectations with an impressive display of golfing prowess.

As he walked off the 18th green, Bakthiar Hussain believed he had victory in the bag after posting an incredible -3 gross score (-6 nett!) and a hefty 42 points.

However, he wasn't to know that Spencer Varley, who teed off in the first group of the day, had already posted a mammoth 43 points - the second highest men's score in WLGS history - and a seriously impressive total off a single-figure handicap. The big scores kept coming in, including two more in the 40s, but it was Spencer who won his first WLGS trophy of the year.

The ladies' section was equally competitive, with Kristina Larsson edging out local player and bookie's favourite Linda Sulman by two points to claim victory in her first event of the year.

Despite missing out on the top prize, Linda still walked away with two pieces of silverware, bagging nearest the pin on the challenging 17th hole as well as the runners-up trophy.

In the men's section, Ian Davies showed off his precision with two superb shots on the drivable 14th hole, earning him nearest the pin in two. Meanwhile, Simon Turner's shot to 5 feet won the nearest the pin gong on the 6th hole with a nicely executed wedge shot.

If anyone in the Pyrford area heard a group of four men shouting extremely loudly it was almost certainly the group containing Malek Mia, who recorded a spectacular Eagle on the eighth hole, contributing to a fabulous final tally of 36. Congratulations Malek!

The event also had important implications for the Order of Merit, with Faisal Islam (coming in with a healthy 38 points) maintaining his lead despite the gargantuan performances by Spencer and Bakthiar. In the Ladies' section, Linda jumped into top spot, while Kristina's victory propelled her into the rankings for the first time.

Overall, it was a fantastic day of golfing action, with plenty of surprises and standout performances. GetGolfing once again put on a fabulous day for the society and we will almost certainly be returning next year based on the feedback we have received. The committee are thrilled with the members' skill and competitive spirit, and were really pleased to welcome four new members to the society. After such a fine day's golf, we can't wait to see what the next event at West Middlesex Golf Club has in store.
